Stocks CFDs with SMC Global Securities

Stocks CFDs are not available to Indian residents through SMC Global Securities or any other platform. India's regulator restricts retail derivative trading to exchange-listed products, and contracts for difference on individual shares sit outside that framework. This page explains where stocks CFD trading stands in India, how the legal alternative works, and what to check before you commit money anywhere.

Where SMC Global Securities Sits

SMC Global Securities is a domestic Indian broker, not an offshore CFD provider. It was incorporated in 1994 and today runs as a Delhi-based listed financial-services group with more than 50 branches, 2,400-plus authorised persons and a presence in Dubai.

SMC Global Securities is SEBI-registered, a member of NSE, BSE, MCX and NCDEX, and a depository participant with both NSDL and CDSL. The exact INZ registration number was not verified at the time of our review.

That registration covers exchange-traded products in India. It does not extend to offshore CFD contracts, because no Indian entity is licensed to offer them. The two categories are governed by different rulebooks entirely.

What SMC Global Securities holdsStatus
SEBI registrationYes, domestic broker
NSE / BSE / MCX / NCDEX membershipYes
NSDL and CDSL depository participantYes
Licence to offer offshore CFDsNo such licence exists in India

NOTE
A SEBI registration is a strong signal for exchange-traded Indian products. It says nothing about CFD products, because those sit outside the Indian framework altogether.

Why Stocks CFDs Fall Outside

The Reserve Bank of India governs foreign exchange under FEMA 1999, and it permits Indian residents to trade only INR-based currency pairs such as USD/INR, EUR/INR, GBP/INR and JPY/INR on SEBI-recognised exchanges. Permitted cross-currency derivatives on NSE, BSE and MSE fall inside the same boundary.

Spot forex and CFDs with offshore brokers sit outside it. Remitting money abroad for margin forex trading is not a permitted end-use under the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, so LRS cannot legally fund an overseas CFD account either. Binary options and offshore CFDs are effectively off-limits for residents, per SEBI and RBI guidance.

This is a hard boundary, not a restricted status. It applies regardless of which offshore brand is advertising at the time.

If your goal is exposure to individual shares, the Indian market gives you several routes that are fully legal, settled in INR and covered by SEBI's investor-protection framework. SMC Global Securities offers all of them.

  • Equity delivery for investors holding positions beyond a single session
  • Intraday equity for same-day positions
  • Futures and options on individual stocks and indices
  • Currency derivatives on recognised exchanges
  • Mutual funds, IPOs, bonds and insurance products alongside the trading book

The trading mechanics on the exchange side run on margin norms set by SEBI, including peak-margin rules that apply to intraday and margin trading facility positions. That is a different world from the 100x to 1000x leverage offshore CFD brokers advertise to Indian residents. Those advertised products remain prohibited for residents regardless of the numbers on the landing page.

Leverage available on SEBI-recognised INR currency derivatives is margin-based, roughly 3 to 5 percent margin on notional, which works out to around 20x to 30x. Verify current figures with SEBI and exchange margin circulars before you size a position.

Costs on the Indian Side

Costs are where a domestic broker and an offshore CFD platform diverge most sharply. CFD providers usually build revenue into spreads. Indian brokers charge explicit, published rates.

SMC Global Securities publishes its fee structure openly. Delivery trades cost around 0.30 percent. Intraday and F&O trades cost Rs.20 per trade under the flat-fee plan, with a percentage-based alternative. Account opening is free, and the annual maintenance charge runs roughly Rs.300 to 450 with the first year waived.

ChargeSMC Global Securities
Account openingRs.0
Delivery brokerage~0.30%
Intraday and F&ORs.20 per trade (flat plan)
Annual maintenance~Rs.300-450, first year nil
Islamic or swap-free accountNot offered
Minimum fundingNo verified minimum at review

Funding runs through UPI and net-banking. The base and settlement currency is INR, with no conversion step, which removes a cost layer that offshore accounts would otherwise add.

PRO TIP
Compare total cost per round trip, not headline brokerage. On short intraday trades the flat Rs.20 plan often wins; on larger delivery positions percentage pricing can come out cheaper.

Risk in Plain Terms

The practical risk on this page is not volatility, it is product availability. An Indian resident who wants stocks CFD exposure has no locally regulated route to it, and the offshore routes carry unresolved legal and tax exposure.

RBI maintains an Alert List of unauthorised forex trading platforms. As of the 19 November 2025 update the list totalled 95 entities, and the seven added in that update were Starnet FX, CapPlace, Mirrox, Fusion Markets, Trive, NXG Markets and Nord FX. RBI states the list is not exhaustive, so its absence from the list is not a clean bill of health for any platform.

Common patterns worth recognising: Telegram and WhatsApp signal groups promising guaranteed monthly returns, cloned broker apps that mimic real brands, and platforms that accept deposits quickly then stall withdrawals. Follow-on recovery-agent scams target the same people a second time.

On the tax side, exchange-traded currency futures and options profits are generally treated as non-speculative business income and taxed at your slab rate. Intraday speculative positions count as speculative business income, with losses set off only against speculative income and carried forward four years, against eight years for non-speculative losses. Residents must declare worldwide income and foreign assets under Schedule FA.

A 20 percent TCS applies on LRS remittances above Rs.10 lakh per financial year, with the threshold raised from Rs.7 lakh effective 1 April 2025. TCS is creditable against your advance tax, not a sunk cost.

WARNING
If a platform tells you UPI deposits into a spot forex or CFD account are normal in India, that claim is false. SEBI-recognised exchange trading settles in INR through licensed channels; offshore CFD deposits ride outside that framework.

What the Numbers Say

When we benchmark SMC Global Securities against the broader Indian market, it lands as a full-service domestic broker with a wide product shelf and moderately priced brokerage. It does not compete in the CFD category at all, because no Indian broker can.

Where it does compare well: branch network, depository services, and the breadth of instruments under one roof, from equities and F&O to mutual funds, IPOs, bonds and insurance. Where it sits in the middle of the pack: platform lineup. SMC Ace Web, SMC Easy Trade on web and mobile, and SMC Privilege with ODIN DIET cover the basics without chasing the most aggressive technology claims in the market.

Choosing a Broker Carefully

For anyone considering a cross-border account, the reliability signals are consistent across regulators and decades. Strong tier-one oversight, segregated client funds, published fee schedules, a long operating record, and support you can actually reach during your market hours.

  • Regulation from a major authority with a public register you can search yourself
  • Client money held in segregated accounts, stated in writing
  • Full fee disclosure including overnight financing and inactivity charges
  • At least five years of verifiable operating history
  • Responsive support in a time zone that overlaps yours

Weighing an offshore option against an Indian one is not really a like-for-like comparison. The legal channel gives you SEBI protection, INR settlement and clear tax treatment. Any offshore route for stocks CFDs would have to clear FEMA and RBI constraints first, which for Indian residents it currently does not.

Who This Instrument Mix Suits

Consider it if your interest sits within legal Indian instruments. SMC Global Securities covers equity, F&O, currency derivatives, mutual funds, IPOs, bonds and insurance in one place, with INR settlement, UPI funding and a published cost structure. If your goal is share exposure, this broker delivers it through channels that carry actual regulatory protection.

Look at a more strictly regulated international broker if your strategy specifically requires CFD structures and you are not an Indian resident, or if you hold residency elsewhere and face a different rulebook. In that case, prioritise FCA, CySEC or ASIC-tier oversight, segregated funds and transparent pricing over headline leverage numbers. Either way, verify the entity on the regulator's own register before you send money anywhere.

What people usually ask

Can Indian residents trade stocks CFDs at all?

No. Spot forex and CFDs with offshore brokers are not permitted for Indian residents, and remitting funds abroad for margin forex trading is not a permitted end-use under the LRS. Legally available share exposure runs through exchange-traded products on NSE and BSE.

What can I trade instead if I want short-term share exposure?

Exchange-traded equity intraday positions and stock futures and options on NSE and BSE cover most short-term strategies. Both settle in INR, fall under SEBI margin norms, and carry defined tax treatment under the Income Tax Act.

How do I know if an offshore platform is safe to use?

Check whether it appears on the RBI Alert List of unauthorised forex trading platforms, which totalled 95 entities as of the 19 November 2025 update and is not exhaustive. Then verify the entity on the regulator's public register, such as SEBI or RBI, before committing funds.

What are the tax rules on currency derivatives profits in India?

Exchange-traded currency futures and options profits are generally treated as non-speculative business income and taxed at your slab rate. Intraday speculative losses can only be set off against speculative income and carried forward four years, versus eight years for non-speculative losses.
